RV and marine locks

The one fact that reframes the whole category: much of the hardware fitted to recreational vehicles and small craft from the factory is convenience hardware, not security hardware. It is designed to keep a door shut while you drive and to be cheap to fit on a production line. That is worth knowing before you assume your compartment locks are protecting anything.
The universal compartment key problem
Most RV storage bays, baggage doors and utility hatches use a small cam lock from a very short list of standard keyings, and manufacturers across the industry have used the same handful for decades. The practical consequence is that a key from one rig routinely opens the compartments of another. This is not a secret and it is not a defect; it was a manufacturing convenience that became an industry habit.
What it means for you is simple. If your generator, tools, hoses, fishing gear and shore power cable live behind a factory bay lock, they are behind a lock that thousands of people already carry the key to. The fix is straightforward: replace the standard cam locks with uniquely keyed ones, and while you are at it have them all keyed alike to each other so one key opens all of your bays and nobody else's. That single change does more for a travel trailer than any alarm.
The same reasoning applies to the entry door on many towables, where the factory lockset is a light unit shared across a whole product line. Upgrading the entry lock and keying it to match the bays gives you one key for the whole rig, which is also the arrangement least likely to end with a key left in a marina car park.
Towing security: coupler, pin and wheel
A trailer is stolen by being driven away, so the locks that matter are the ones on the towing connection.
- Coupler lock. Fills or covers the ball socket so another vehicle's ball cannot be dropped into it. The good ones enclose the coupler rather than clamping across it, and they must actually match your coupler size, which is where most purchases go wrong.
- Coupler latch pin lock. A smaller lock through the latch itself, useful as a secondary and not adequate alone.
- Hitch pin lock. Locks the receiver pin so the hitch itself cannot be removed with the trailer attached. Cheap, and the one people forget.
- Wheel or boot lock. Highly visible and effective as a deterrent for long-term storage, awkward enough that few people use it for an overnight stop.
- Cargo bar and door locks on enclosed trailers, where the ramp bar and side door usually need attention independently of the tow connection.
Layering matters more than any single item. Locking only the coupler leaves the hitch removable; locking only the hitch leaves the coupler free. Two inexpensive locks used together beat one expensive one used alone.
Marine hardware: hatches, consoles and lockers
Boat locks live in the harshest place a lock can live. Constant spray, standing water, ultraviolet on plastics, and vibration that works fixings loose.
- Companionway and cabin hatches use slide bolts, hasps and cam locks, and the failure is nearly always the fixing or the backing rather than the lock body.
- Console and glove-box locks are small cam or wafer locks protecting electronics and documents. They are also the ones most often seized, because they sit in spray and get used rarely.
- Deck plates and fish-box lids take flush pulls with a locking function, chosen for the flush profile as much as for security.
- Dock boxes and lift controls take padlocks and are the most exposed hardware anyone owns here.
- Outboard and motor security uses purpose-made clamp and bracket locks that stop a motor being lifted off a transom.
Stainless is not just stainless
Marine hardware is normally specified in 316 stainless rather than 304. The difference is the addition of molybdenum, which is what gives 316 its resistance to chlorides, and chlorides are exactly what salt water is. A 304 fitting looks identical on the shelf, costs less and will show tea-staining and pitting within a season of real exposure. If a fitting near the water is not specified, assume it is the cheaper one.
Galvanic corrosion, the quiet killer
Two dissimilar metals in contact, with salt water as the electrolyte, form a small battery, and the less noble metal corrodes away to protect the other. This is why a stainless screw through an aluminium hatch frame eats the frame, why a plated steel padlock on a stainless hasp turns into a lump of rust, and why a lock that seems fine on the bench fails in six months on a boat.
What actually helps: keep metals compatible where they touch, isolate them with a nylon or plastic bushing where you cannot, use a marine anti-seize or dielectric grease on threads instead of oil, and rinse with fresh water and dry after any salt exposure. The point of the grease is to exclude water from the joint, and the point of the rinse is that salt left in place keeps working long after the boat is on the trailer.
Keyed alike across the whole rig
The single most appreciated job we do in this category is consolidating keys. A typical motorhome owner carries an entry key, two or three different bay keys, a fuel-door key, a trailer coupler key and a padlock key for the dock box, and half of them are unlabelled. Bringing compatible locks onto one key removes the fumbling and, more importantly, removes the habit of leaving locks unlocked because the right key is never at hand.
Not everything can join the set. Different lock formats, dissimilar cylinder types and some factory hardware simply will not accept a common keying, and we would rather replace those with something that can than pretend otherwise. Two keys that both work is a much better outcome than seven that might.
The trade-off is worth stating: one key opening everything means one lost key affects everything. For most owners that is the right call, because the alternative is a set of locks that are not actually being used. Where something genuinely needs to be separate, keep it separate on purpose.
Keys lost on the water
It happens constantly, and the reason is that a key ring is dense and the water is deep. There is no recovering it, so the question is what happens next.
- Float your keys. A foam fob is not a gimmick, it is the difference between an inconvenience and a tow. It has to be big enough to float the whole ring, which most cheap ones are not.
- Carry a spare separately from the working set, and not in the same pocket or the same bag.
- Record the key codes stamped on your locks somewhere dry and away from the boat. Many marine and RV locks carry a code on the cylinder or the lock face, and a key can often be cut to that code without the original, which is faster and cheaper than replacing hardware.
- Where no code exists, a key can frequently be produced by reading the cylinder itself, and where the cylinder is corroded past that point, replacement is the honest answer.
The RV version of the same story is a key left in a rental car, in a campsite bathroom or a hundred miles back down the road. The remedy is identical: codes recorded in advance turn a trip-ending problem into a phone call.
Sun, plastic and the hardware nobody services
Ultraviolet does to recreational hardware what salt does to marine hardware. Plastic bezels on entry-door handles become chalky and then brittle, keypad membranes on RV entry doors fade until the digits are unreadable, and rubber gaskets around compartment latches harden and stop excluding water, which is how the salt gets to the cylinder in the first place.
Because a rig sits unused for stretches, none of this is noticed until you are loading for a trip. Practical habits that prevent it: work every lock and latch a few times before storage rather than after, use a dry film lubricant in cylinders rather than penetrating oil, which holds sand, cover or shade the entry door if the rig lives outdoors, and treat rubber seals so they stay flexible. A cylinder that has not been turned in eight months is the one that will not turn on departure day.
Opening and replacing when there is no key
We open and replace RV and marine locks for owners who can establish the vehicle or vessel is theirs. That normally means title or registration, or the storage or slip agreement together with photo identification, and for a business, someone with authority to act for it. Where two parties are in dispute over the same trailer or boat, we stop and it goes to the proper process.
What the work involves depends on the hardware. Compartment cam locks are usually replaced outright, because the lock costs less than the labour of nursing a corroded one. Entry-door locksets are usually replaced as an assembly and keyed to the rest of the rig. Marine console and hatch locks are frequently seized rather than merely keyless, and freeing one that has been in salt for years is often not worth doing when a new one can be fitted and specified properly this time. We say which it is before starting, not afterwards.
Storage lots and slips
A rig or boat in long-term storage is unattended for months, which changes what security is worth. The layered approach that works: unique bay locks so the universal key is useless, a coupler lock plus a hitch pin lock so the tow connection needs two attacks, a shrouded padlock rather than a long-shackle one on any gate or bar, and hardware that will still open when you come back, which on this coast means specified stainless rather than whatever was on the shelf. Storage facilities and marinas set their own rules about what may be fitted and where, and those rules come first.

Questions
Is it true one key opens most RV compartments?
For factory bay and baggage locks, largely yes. The industry has used a very short list of standard keyings for decades, so a key from one rig often opens another's compartments. Replacing them with uniquely keyed cam locks, all keyed alike to each other, fixes it.
Can all my RV locks use one key?
Usually most of them can, including the entry door and the bays. Some factory hardware will not accept a common keying and is best replaced with something that will. Two keys that always work beats seven that might.
What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless?

My boat key went in the water. What now?

Why did my compartment lock seize when it was almost new?
Salt in the mechanism, usually helped along by a hardened door gasket that stopped excluding water, and often accelerated by dissimilar metals in contact. Rinse and dry after exposure, and use a dry film lubricant rather than oil.
Do I need a coupler lock if I already have a hitch pin lock?
Yes. They defend different things. A hitch pin lock stops the hitch being removed; a coupler lock stops another vehicle being connected. Using both means an attacker has to defeat two.
